College students across the country are approaching the final stretch in the first semester of their respected years. This time of year is usually filled with cramming, procrastination, overwhelmingness, and most prominently; stress. Students at High Point University have their respected relaxants to calm their nerves and stress.

Glorified Golf

Steven Sabia, junior at HPU, says his passion for golf helps with his anxiety, and during a jam-packed time like this, he's out at the range more often than usual. “When it’s just me at the range, all I focus on is hitting this ball as hard and far as possible, all stress and worry leaves my mind, as it’s solely occupied by golf.”

According to Atrio Health Plans, Mental Health can very well be boosted by golf. They believe playing golf is great for managing anxiety and depression, reducing stress, and even improving social interaction.

A study conducted by The Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services claims that golf, believe it or not, provides a form of therapy. The study examined the perceived impact of golf activities on participants' physical and mental health, social contact, and daily activities.

“The main theme that arose from the data was Shaping a New Direction in Life, elaborated by the categories of ameliorated physical fitness, creation of a social meeting place, improved focus and concentration, practical help and support, and reduced mental symptom burden,” according to the study.

Benefits of Baseball

Golf isn’t the only sport people find stress relieving. Junior Jake German isn’t the biggest baseball fan, but he is at almost every High Point Rockers home game. With the stadium being less than five minutes away, and the ticket prices being cheap, it’s a very convenient option.

“I can’t really put my finger on why it is so relaxing and relieving for me, but I really enjoy the experience, I feel welcomed and comfortable. I think it’s one of those things where my mind is solely focused on one thing over the other, and I’m just more engaged and involved with a fun sports game than the endless amounts of work I have to do.”

No Panic At The Park

The High Point City Lake Park is rated the number one attraction spot in the city of High Point, according to TripAdvisor. Inside the park there are mini golf courses, canoeing, playgrounds, walkways for runners and cyclists, and great views of mountains and the woods.

“I’m there almost every weekend, not necessarily playing mini golf and definitely not canoeing, but just there walking around and listening to music.” says HPU student Adam Rehman, who’s been going to the park since he was a freshman. “The scenery is great, the whole vibe of everyone there is happy and relaxing.”

The park has gone through some complications in the past due to the Covid-19 pandemic, such as having to implement a curfew, less attraction spots are available, and the activities required less people per turn. Things since then have been going in the right direction.

“Before, only a certain number of people could be playing mini golf at a time, and less people were allowed on each canoe. There were some restrictions, but it’s starting to look and feel how I remember it being.” says Adam.
